The Royal West of England Academy in Bristol invited artists to submit their work for consideration to its most popular show on the exhibition calendar. Now in its 163rd year, the Annual Open Exhibition provides an opportunity for regional, national and international artists to exhibit their work alongside other renowned names in British art such as last year’s invited artist Sir Peter Blake (Hon) RWA.

Chimney Stacks and Red Rocks
Geevor Tin Mine Museum
12-16 October 2015

Following my collaborative artist residency and exhibition at Geevor Tin Mine Museum with poet, Evlynn Sharp, I have continued to make work inspired by the site and have kept in close touch with all the staff at Geevor. I worked with Clint Hosking from the Learning Team and we were successful in applying for a grant from Feast to undertake a community based project to coincide with the Big Draw in October.

The Red Rocks and Chimney Stacks project aimed to engage with members of the local community in order to produce creative works inspired by the heritage and industrial landscape, particularly around Geevor Tin Mine. It offered local groups the opportunity to work with a professional artist who was familiar with both the landscape and the mining history.

During the week of 12th – 16th of October I facilitated art workshops in and around the community that surrounds Geevor Tin Mine and worked with over 60 participants. I worked with groups such as the Pendeen Art Group, the University of the Third Age, and at venues such as St Just Methodist Chapel Rooms, Penlee Art Gallery and Coach House in Penzance and in Geevor’s own listed buildings.

One of the highlights for me was to be invited to give a talk in the Gallery at Penlee House where they have a collection of work by Cornish artists and an education room based in the heart of the gardens.

Clint Hosking said "The project has allowed Geevor to reach an audience that does not always engage with the site. A mining site is not perceived as an art inspiring location despite the fact that Geevor has welcomed many artists over the years that have produced fascinating works. By working with the surrounding community the project has encouraged people to engage with their heritage and use it as a source of inspiration".

"Foot Fall"

Sally drawing flip flops

As part of Westfield Art Week, artist Sally Booth was commissioned to make drawings in response to the location of Westfield Shopping Centre in Stratford, where the Shape Gallery is based. Sally chose to focus on the people who pass through Westfield on a typical day. During the afternoon of 6th August 2014, Sally made a series of on-the-spot pen drawings of people's feet as they passed by or visited the gallery.

This collection of small canvases and concertina sketchbooks of drawings shows a wide cross section of people who engaged with Sally as she drew - mothers and daughters out shopping, workmen in their high-vis jackets, a woman walking her friend's dog and a man in union jack socks and silver shoes, the drawings are quick and full of humour. A selection of the drawings will be on show at the Shape Gallery over the summer.

Theatre practitioner Katie posed for this series of drawings for me, which shows the process in stages and the finished drawings have been illuminated on an X ray light box and displayed at the hospital as part of the residency exhibition.

The deft touch of the fingers on the till, the rotational rinse of the elbows, the solid observing of the petrie dish, the logic of patients' notes in their hoppers, Sally Booth's drawings trace some of the choreography and beauty of the work that the hospital's complement of 3,800 NHS and Serco staff does, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Inspired by the X-Ray light boxes in the hospital, Sally, who always works directly from the subject, made around a hundred transparent pen drawings in hospital departments, including pathology, microbiology and health records, and in materials handling (where the robots live), the restaurant and the woods.

Edges and Extremes

Working closely with local people, Sally and Evlynn explore traditions and work practices past and present. They reflect distinctive patterns, landscapes and rhythms of people's lives such as Davie Robertson's speed of filleting, the artistry of elderly Shetland maakers (knitters) Annie Henry and Emma Isbister, and Geevor Tin Mine's former grizzly man (rock breaker) Eddie Strick.

Edges and Extremes project, Cornwall

My collaborative art project with poet, Evlynn Sharp, is now in its second stage. Following our residency in Shetland and exhibitions in Scalloway, Edinburgh, Herts and London, we have been working at the opposite end of the British Isles this Autumn in Cornwall. Based at Pendeen on the North Atlantic Coast, we worked closely with the staff at Geevor tin mine museum, and have made drawings and writing inspired by the landscape, industry and people we have met there. This included being taken into a disused tin mine on the coast. We were guided a hundred and fifty feet below the surface and crawled through tunnels of dripping granite with colours of rust, iron oxide and the blackest, velvety black I have ever experienced.

Below are some of my A3 sketchbook drawings from our trip.

Eddie is an ex miner from Geevor and continues to work at the museum as a guide. He worked as a "Grizzly Man" breaking down rocks in the stopes. I drew his hands as he and Evlynn talked about his work at the mine.

Evlynn is currently in the process of recording her Geevor poems with the help of BBC Radio Cornwall. The recording will include local voices from Geevor and local musicians.

I have had an artist book on display at this exhibition. The original poems by Evlynn Sharp and the pen drawings by me were a collaboration inspired by two late Victorian literary year books we were sent by Susan Kruse as part of the Library of Lost Books project. Inside the flyleaf of these books were Victorian adverts and addresses of publishing houses and printers around the Charing Cross Road and Holborn area of the time. I went to these sites to see what remains today, and found that many of the addresses are now part of the huge Cross Rail development under construction. The drawings from these locations as they are now and Evlynn's poems on transparent paper refer to traces of this history, and changing times. Our drawings and text were hand-bound into an artist book by Catherine Scriven for display at this exhibition. www.libraryofbirmingham.com/event/Events/libraryoflostbooks

November 13th Show at Wimbledon

For the 2012 Wimbledon Championships I was invited by the Education Department of the Wimbledon Lawn Tennis Museum to undertake a residency and produce art works highlighting what goes on behind the scenes. I produced a body of my own work and worked alongside groups of artists from The Wimbledon Guild, Saint Cecilia's Wandsworth and Merton Abbey Primary School. I facilitated sessions on location at Centre Court and elsewhere, where they created images in a panoramic format.

News from Shetland

Evlynn Sharp and Sally have been working at the cosy Booth studio in Scalloway. During the first two weeks here they have met with knitters, fishermen, artists, and local organisations such as BBC Radio Shetland, Shetland College and the New Shetlander.

In between the fast weather, exploring the landscape and experiencing the friendly Shetland hospitality of tea and homemade cakes we have been working hard together. Sally has been drawing the team of scallop processors and fish filleters at Hunters Fish in the early mornings, and Evlynn has been writing poems inspired by the stories of local people.

They have had a short piece featured on the local radio, and have organised an open studio event.

Evlynn will be recording her poems with the BBC and some local musicians and they hope to end our trip with an expedition to Unst in the very far north by bus and ferry.

In case anyone is going to Tennis at Wimbledon, I have an informal exhibition up from my Residency with the Education Department in the Conservatory Buffet (Court 1 building). There is work on display by the school children I worked with using unusual materials, intermingled with some of my own on-the-spot sketches, panoramas and small canvases showing life "Behind the Scenes". This is a busy public space with work hanging at both ends of the room and is open to anyone who is attending the Tournament. Look out for White Line Man and Rufus the Harris Hawk.

More work from Wimbledon will be on show to the wider public in September.

The group from St Cecilia's experimented with layered drawings on acetate from a high vantage point indoors looking out, and made a large collaborative concertina drawing with a view of the courts. We got a nice thank you from Ben, the class teacher, following their visit.

"On behalf of the pupils at Saint Cecilias, Wandsworth, I wanted to thank you for giving us such a wonderful experience of Wimbledon Tennis Club. I know that the group I was with really enjoyed the various mediums with their drawings and I have never seen them so immersed and focussed in what they were doing!"

Carmina Burana by Carl Orff

Colliers Wood Chorus & Merton Music Foundation present CARMINA BURANA by Carl Orff

Sat 3rd March 19.30
St Barnabas Church, Mitcham

I have been working alongside Christopher Killerby, Director of Colliers Wood Chorus with year 5/6 pupils at Merton Abbey Primary, Links and Singlegate schools on combined music/art workshops. The drawings made by the children have been photographed to form a live projection during the above performance of Carmina Burana.

The aims of the workshops were to introduce children to a classical piece of music and to engage with it creatively. The workshops also aimed to combine and develop listening and drawing skills and foster an interest in performance and the visual arts. The children drew musical instruments that form part of the orchestra, worked from illuminated manuscripts and made energetic and expressive live drawings in real time to the music.

Duckie at the Barbican

"Copyright Christmas"

Duckie at the Barbican

I have been working in the team as a set painter for this Duckie Christmas production which has been designed by artist Robin Whitmore, and which premiers at the Barbican. Lots of big buckets of paint and wallpaper paste! We have been working at the Biscuit Factory on huge canvases and using lots of dribbling paint. There will also be an alternative Duckie Christmas market running at the Barbican if you are looking for gifts, or see my list of limited editions posters for sale below

Duckie at the Barbican

Reviews

Robin Whitmore's sets for Copyright Christmas have received some great reviews. "The set, designed by Robin Whitmore, is brilliantly realised." The Telegraph http://www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/theatre/theatre-reviews/8959422/Copyright-Christmas-Duckie-Barbican-Theatre-review.html

Barbican Theatre

10 - 31 December 2011 / 19:30, 16:00, 21:30

Capitalism is collapsing and the criminal economy is taking over... so let's go shopping! Step inside the Duckie superstore and witness the decaying arcades of branded Britain. Conspicuous consumption thrives in this promenade performance featuring saucy shopaholics, supermarket sweepers and sweatshop santas.

Purchase your dreams - love, peace and happiness - all boxed up as consumer durables. In an age when we know the Katie Price of everything and the value of nothing, this rollicking good romp asks: Does Christmas mean more than shopping?

Continuing their tradition of alternative Christmas shows for the Barbican, including the Olivier Award-winning C'est Barbican!, the Duckie collective returns with more original festive fare.

Starring a cast of 20 all star performers including Dickie Beau, Scottee, Jess Love, Ryan Styles, H Plewis, Sheila Ghelani, Roy Kerr, Susannah Hewlett, Harold Offeh and Bird la Bird.

With sculptor Tim Norris and Poet, Evlynn Sharp, I was selected to undertake the schools commission, with three participating schools in Dorset. Working with Pokesdown Primary, Ruscombe First School and Court Hill First School we led arts workshops, both in the schools and on field trips to the island, (which is located in Poole Harbour). The pupils made drawings and sculptures inspired by the materials, environment and wildlife of the island, and also wrote poems and made a recording in response to the site. The project culminated in a labyrinth made by Tim Norris, with assistance from pupils of Rushcombe, and which incorporated log drawings and poems by the children from each school and willow sculptures as signposting.

125 Rackets Community Art project

Over the last few months the Education Department at Wimbledon Lawn Tennis Club have been working with several local schools and groups on a community art project that celebrates the 125th Championships. Each participant was given one of 125 wooden, unstrung, unfinished racket frames and asked to interpret it in a medium of their choosing to reflect The Championships. Many of the rackets will be exhibited in the windows of businesses in Wimbledon Village for the duration of this year's tournament, while others will be displayed in suitable locations around the grounds.

Revealed: Hastings and St Leonards

A Creative Landscapes Residency; Summer 2010

I was one of two artists selected to undertake this residency, which was an English Heritage-Accentuate project exploring accessible approaches to Heritage.

Photographer, Lynn Weddle and I each facilitated workshops and events in Hastings and made our own work inspired by the hidden histories and the landscape in and around the Stade.

Drawing tent at Hastings

I made a series of drawings on the spot in and around the Stade, using local fisherman, Mick Barrow's net shop as a base. This is perhaps the most unusual "studio" I have ever had. No heat or light, and huddled under a huge tangle of nets and fishing tackle, but right on the doorstep to watch the comings and goings and everyday life on the Stade.

Mick at net shop door Mick at net shop door

Based on the theme of "Revealed: Hastings and St Leonards", I made work showing glimpses of the sometimes hidden everyday life in and around the Old Town, with the net shops and constantly changing weather as a backdrop to my images.

Images included the inside of a net shop, with its tangle of nets like a huge wasps nest, the back of the Fish Market, and partial views of the rooftops of the Stade from a Fish and Chip café or against a moody sky.

Residency Commission for Graeae

In celebration of its recent move to purpose built premises The Bradbury Studios, 138 Kingsland Rd in Shoreditch, Graeae has invited me to undertake a residency commission inspired by the building itself and the process of creative activity that takes place in and around the company.

Wandsworth Heritage Postcard project

I took part in this project by facilitating art work with Year 3 pupils at Westbridge Primary school. The children illustrated Wandsworth based stories including the Duke of Wellington having a duel in the asparagus fields, spies at Clapham Junction, Queen Elizabeth the first getting her feet wet in the river Wandle, and hot air balloons crash landing in Southfields. The children designed a series of postcards and their own stamps.

Barbican Centre Live Guide training

At the invitation of Barbican Centre, I have devised and delivered training for gallery staff and hosts towards developing and launching a live guide service for visually impaired visitors to the gallery exhibitions.

This includes one to one assistance around the gallery as required, an overview of the exhibition, description of selected works and, for some exhibitions, handling artworks or interpretative material. The aim is that visits can be tailored to visitors' own interests and access requirements. For more information or to book please contact access@barbican.org.uk or call 020 7382 2382.

Jodi Awards 2009

These awards are for excellence in accessible cultural websites and digital media.

Sally Booth won the Jodi Awards 2009 - Digital Access Online: Low Budget category for this website. She is the first individual artist to win a Jodi award.

Sally was presented the award at the Victoria and Albert Museum's prestigious Sackler Centre, by Martha Lane Fox, the government's Champion for Digital Inclusion. The judges commented that her website "exudes accessibility" and gave the following feedback:

"Artist Sally Booth's commitment to accessibility is exceptional. The website is easy to use, well colour contrasted, experiments with two types of verbal descriptions of her artwork and provides British Sign Language. The choice of colours, tone of language and font combine to give this site a warm feel - a rare quality in the world-wide-web. Her website was seen as a master class in minute attention to accessibility."

Kevin Carey, Chairman of RNIB said: "It has been said since the beginning of the web that accessibility kills creativity in web design; I'm not surprised that it has taken a visually impaired person to discredit this proposition. In her work, Sally Booth demonstrates creative adventure with comprehensive accessibility."

"One of the things I wanted to do on my residency was to make a series of works directly reflecting my experience of the Bluecoat studio, whose beautiful oval windows had inspired me from the beginning. I made ongoing photographs of the changing light and shadows cast by the windows at night and in the afternoons. Sometimes the light was diffuse and soft, evocative of my own vision; sometimes reflections were abstracted, sharp or almost invisible. As the days slowly lengthened over the course of my residency, and glimpses of developing work and general studio life appeared in the background, this series became an important part of the passage of time during the residency."

Adam Reynolds Memorial Bursary residency at the Bluecoat

1st February - 1st May 2009

As a visual artist usually based in London, the opportunity to spend 3 months away concentrating on my own practice in a city as visually and culturally stimulating as Liverpool was an exciting prospect.

Sally sketching at the North Docks
Sally sketching at the North Docks, Photo by Tristan Brady-Jacobs

The scene was set from the beginning with a rather surreal and magical initiation to the city. I arrived to a day of horizontal snow and when I ventured out to try and find the Mersey in what seemed like a bit of a blizzard, I felt as if I was walking through a still from a New York movie or a Whistler painting. The Liver Building was veiled by impossibly giant snowflakes and the river and usually distinctive skyline were almost invisible and indistinguishable from each other. This theme has continued through my residency with an interest in making work that explores transparency and obscurity.

Adam Reynolds Memorial Bursary

I have been awarded the second Adam Reynolds Memorial Bursary, which this year is run in partnership with Shape, The Bluecoat, and Tate Liverpool. The bursary includes a 3 month residency with a studio based at the Bluecoat in Liverpool, with advice and consultancy from Tate Liverpool.

The bursary offers me the exciting opportunity to develop my practice without a fixed outcome, and I will be using the time to make new work directly inspired by my experience of the city of Liverpool and the studio itself.

Artist in residence at Merton Abbey Primary School

In partnership with Acava Studios and Arts Development Merton during February/March 2008.

I have recently had the wonderful opportunity to work as artist in residence with Year 2 pupils at Merton Abbey Primary School. Over a 5 week period, I undertook a drawing project with the children (aged 6-7). Using the local urban environment and Wandle Trail as inspiration, the children experimented with new drawing materials, including graphite sticks, charcoal, white pens, till rolls and recycled paper, and drew on location at Merton Abbey Mills. They made some fabulous individual and collaborative drawings from life and from memory (see Marco's gorgeous drawing of a pylon).

I have also been making my own till roll drawing of the 14 mile Wandle Trail as part of my residency.

Filmmakers Sav Kyriacou and Lindsay Starbuck have filmed the process of the project with the children, and this has been made into a DVD. This film will be shown at a sharing assembly at Merton Abbey Primary School on 6th June 2008 at 2pm.

I will be facilitating a drawing installation with year 2 pupils and they will be showing a selection of their work from the project at Merton Abbey Mills on 7th June 2008, as part of the Wandle Valley Festival.

Participatory Projects

Liberty Festival

In September 2007 I was selected to undertake a drawing installation and facilitate a participatory art project with the public, as part of the Liberty Arts Festival in Trafalgar Square. The event showcased the work of disabled artists and performers and was attended by several thousand people.

Liberty Festival Drawing Tent
Liberty Festival Drawing Tent in Trafalgar Square. The photo shows a view of the finished tent from the entrance, every surface covered by layers of multi-coloured drawing done by the public. Voile and timber with coloured permanent pens.

My project comprised of an octagonal drawing tent, constructed out of timber, with transparent voile screens which gave a 360 degree view of the square. The tent was accessible, enabling the public to enter as they pleased using permanent coloured pens to draw directly onto the material, using the panoramic view of the square as a starting point for their inspiration. The tent was attended by all ages, and the end result was a collective drawing in many colours, overlaying my own drawing.

The picture shows a member of the public drawing on an outside section of the semi transparent tent, with the fountain, the National Gallery and members of the public in the background. A placard reads "Drawing Installation. Join in and make your mark. Drawing installation by Sally Booth. Help create a panoramic view of the square".

Exhibitions and Residencies

Chichester Open exhibition

I had two double spread landscape oil sketches accepted in the Chichester Open exhibition. An international exhibition of contemporary painting, drawing and print held in conjunction with a series of concerts and talks.

Below you can see these landscape oil sketches shown before framing. These landscapes are examples of the "black pastel" series made at Cannizaro Park in 2007 in a black spiral bound sketchbook.

Blossom and Pathway, 2007, oil pastel, oil stick on black paper
Blossom and Pathway, 2007, oil pastel, oil stick on black paper. 30cm x 73cm.

The picture depicts one of the hidden, dark, secret areas of the park. On the right a silhouette of a black tree trunk spreads into four dark branches with bright yellow sunlight showing through. In the centre the composition is cut through by the spiral binding. On the left of centre a dark leafed rhododendron bush erupts with white splodges for blossom, almost oozing out of the top of the picture. It is framed on the left by smaller azalea bushes, the closest in red, while the floor is covered with an orange cinder path. The pastel is thick and sticky, with abstract patches of colour and squiggly marks like wax crayon to depict form, with areas of black left bare.

Looking through to the Azalea dell, Cannizaro Park, 2007, oil pastel on black paper, 30cm x 73cm.

This sketch was made just behind my studio. There is a week in late spring when the Azalea dell suddenly explodes into garish colour, and the picture attempts to capture this brief event. The sketch was made on a very sunny day, with strong areas of light and shade, and dappled light covering the picture.

The view of the dell is framed in the foreground on the right by a large unidentifiable deciduous tree, whose leaves and branches run across the top of the picture, and on the left by a dark, shadowy, abstract form - a wall topped by mushroom shaped hedge with tinges of red. The eye is led through to a shaft of yellow white sunlight on the ground running across the centre of the picture, and rests on the riot of colour that is the azalea dell in the background.

The azalea dell appears to me as a riot of undefined, broken, clashing blobs of colour. The blossom is depicted roughly, with small dots of pastel, from left to right green, soft grey blue, white, burnt orange, red, grey-pink, white, yellow, orange, red, yellow. It seems an anarchic mix!

Holton Lee Residency and East Meets West Exhibition

My first connection with Holton Lee came about as result of the inclusion of one of my Japanese concertina sketchbooks in their first Disability Arts Competition exhibition, held at the Faith House Gallery early in 2007. I instantly fell in love with the gallery and the setting.

In May 2007 I was invited by Tony Heaton, Director, to work at Holton Lee as artist-in-residence, as part of Purbeck Arts Week, My brief was to make work for a solo exhibition at the gallery, combining local landscapes and work from my recent visits to Japan as inspiration for the show.

Holton Lee Residency

Holton Lee is situated in a secluded and varied landscape of heathland, woodland and reed beds. I spent the week dodging the torrential rain and making work from exploratory walks in this landscape and around the area of Poole Harbour. This included a series of panoramic drawings and paintings on canvas, in sketchbooks and on roller blinds.

East Meets West Exhibition

The exhibition featured panoramic paintings, drawings and photographs inspired by the landscapes of Japan and Holton Lee. I also made a site specific drawing installation on 6 floor to ceiling roller blinds, showing a panoramic view of the horizon from the gallery. These can still be seen at the gallery by appointment.

The exhibition ran from 28 July - 1 September 2007 at Faith House Gallery, Holton Lee.

Ink and watercolour on Japanese paper
25cm x 430cm

This postcard shows a section of one of my panoramic sketchbooks from Japan, which was on show at the exhibition.

Description The sketchbook is propped up lengthwise across the page in front of a plain black background. It is only partly unfolded like a concertina. The zigzag shapes show glimpses of watercolour images in yellows, greens and reds, of the view of a sunlit garden from a Japanese tea house.

Oneword radio interview

I was interviewed by Hayley Radford for Oneword radio. This was broadcast on the "The Gallery" on 27th July 2007. They have kindly agreed to allow us to use the interview here.

Residency in Japan

I recently returned from a residency in Japan, funded by the Gen Foundation. I worked in collaboration with the University of Art in Kyoto and delivered lectures and workshops for the students and made work inspired by the Zen gardens of Kyoto. On my return I have been developing a series of sketchbooks from Japan.

One of these pieces was exhibited at Holton Lee in Jan 2007. I will be having a solo show at Holton Lee in Dorset in August 2007.

Holton Lee in Dorset

My work has also been showcased as part of a film installation at the Singaproe Fringe Festival in Jan 2007, by the Helen Hamlyn Centre.

I have acted as guest speaker on inclusive design at the Royal College of Art in Feb 2007, and with Wire Design at the Design Council in March.

In April 2007 I was invited to take part in Helen Hamlyn Centre 24 hour design challenge as a consultant user, as part of Include 2007. I worked with Sprout, who won the award for most innovative inclusive design.

"Living Art" Project, Whitechapel Art Gallery

In collaboration with poet, Evlynn Sharp, I acted as artist facilitator on this 6 week partnership project with Vocaleyes and the Whitechapel Art Gallery. Using the Rondinone and David Adjaye exhibitions at the gallery as a starting point, we worked with visually impaired artists to explore description and it's relation to the visual arts and space. The project culminated in a performance and readings of the work held at the Whitechapel in April 2006. An audio CD of participants work has been produced as part of the project.
